[France] : Icarus Films/Les Fulms Du Poisson, 2013
Welcome to a one-of-a-kind Paris education program for immigrant children from around the globe. In her feature documentary debut, director Julie Bertucelli (SINCE OTAR LEFT, THE TREE) follows one class of students ranging from 11 to 15 years of age as they begin life in a new land. Hailing from countries across the globe including Ireland, Brazil, China, Ukraine, Tunisia, Venezuela, Guinea and Libya, many of the students at 'La Grange aux Belles,' a school in the diverse 10th district of Paris, are asylum seekers. They must learn French as they combat homesickness, juggle weighty familial responsibilities and recover from the trauma of previous lives of social and economic devastation. Their teacher, Ms. Cervoni, must exercise as much patience and skill in instructing the students as in her interactions with their parents. As she guides them through a rigorous school year and attempts to prepare them for the transition to mainstream classes, she is a key negotiator in schoolyard conflicts and cultural clashes and navigating complicated dynamics both inside and outside the classroom.

In between the notes [videorecording] : a portrait of Pandit Pran Nath, master Indian musician
San Francisco, CA. : Other Minds, 2006
Raga vrinda sarang -- Raga asavari -- Raga darbari -- Raga misra kafi -- 82 VII 15 tambouras.

"Pran Nath's teacher, Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, who died in 1950, was the acknowledged master of the Kirana style in the 20th century, and through his performances on All India Radio, was chiefly responsible for making it the most influential and popular classical style of its time. Beginning in the late 1930s, Pran Nath too was hired to perform on All India Radio and quickly gained fame as the new young master of the style. After a long career in India, in 1970 Pran Nath met the American avant-garde composers Terry Riley and La Monte Young and Young's wife, the artist Marian Zazeela, who became his disciples. Mainly through their devotion and effort Pran Nath was able to begin a new career in the West as a musician and performer. Although In between the notes is a video portrait of a particular artist, its real subject is artistic integrity. Throughout his life Pandit Pran Nath has resisted every opportunity to advance his career commercially by acceding to the popular appetite for technical display, very common among audiences at concerts of Indian classical music, including vocal music. His work has always involved a search for purity of expression, finding the exact nuance of pitch and tonal quality, "in between the notes", to fit perfectly the mood and nature of the raga being performed".--Cover.

Maurice Ravel [videorecording]
Academy Media ; written, produced and directed by Malcolm Hossick
West Long Branch, NJ : Distributed by KULTUR International Films, [2005]
French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was a major force in the history of 20th Century music. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, where his most influential teacher was the French composer Gabriel Fauré. Because of the tonal color, harmonies, mood and extra-musical associations of much of his music, Ravel is often associated with the French impressionistic composer Claude Debussy. Unlike Debussy, however, Ravel was strongly attracted to abstract, logical musical structures. His vivid, transparent orchestral colors rank him as one of the modern masters of orchestration. Ravel's impressionistic leanings are uppermost in the demanding piano suites "Miroirs" and "Gaspard de la Nuit" and in the "Rhapsodie Espagnole" for orchestra. He was gifted at evoking past eras in works such as the "Pavane pour une Infante Defunte." His stage works include the operas "L'heure Espagnole" and "L'enfant et les Sortileges"; "Bolero"; and the ballet "Daphnis et Chloe." His last major work was the "Piano Concerto in D" for the left hand, written for Viennese pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in World War I. Filmed on location in the cities and places that influenced his works.

Ludwig van Beethoven [videorecording]
written, produced and directed by Malcolm Hossick ; Academy Media
West Long Branch, N.J. : Distributed by KULTUR International Films, [2005]
"One of the greatest masters of music, Beethoven is particularly admired for his orchestral works, including symphonies and concertos plus sonatas and chamber music. His early work until 1802, shows a progressive mastery of the high classical style of Haydn and Mozart. A general growth in the proportions and rhetorical power of Beethoven's works in the period 1798-1802 culminates in the highly dramatic compositions that mark the birth of Romanticism in music. The late period, during which he grew deaf, marked a change from dramatic to introspective-inspired music. The highly expressive music Beethoven produced, infused with a sense of his own struggles to overcome adversity, for centuries has inspired composers like Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Wagner." -- Back of container.

Other works of his were La Forza del Destino, La Traviata, Aida, and after a brief retirement, Otello and Falstaff. Joseph Haydn [videorecording]
Academy Media ; written, produced and directed by Malcolm Hossick
West Long Branch, N.J. : Distributed by KULTUR International Films, [2005], ©1995
"Born in Austria, Haydn was one of the greatest composers of the Classical Period in music. He is renowned for taking the established forms of the symphony and string quartet and shaping them into the powerful media for musical expression that they became thereafter. He brought symphonic traits to the piano sonata and was a master of chamber music. His majestic masses and endearing choral works also continue as standards in the concert repertory, and his operas are still highly-valued. Haydn and Mozart maintained a friendship which was symbiotically influential and productive for both composers. He also briefly taught Beethoven in Vienna, for their conflicting personalities made this experience unrewarding. Beethoven was nevertheless a great admirer of Haydn's works. The twelve symphonies that he composed for his London concert series represent the pinnacle of his symphonic work. The Creation is his best loved choral work." -- Back of container.

His wife encouraged his composing and he wrote tone poems Till Eulenspiegel, Thus Spake Zarathustra, Don Quixote and Ein Heldenleben. After 1900, Strauss concentrated on operas including the cynical Feuersnot, the more advanced Salome and the powerful Elektra. His crowning glory, Der Rosenkavalier brought him great fortunes. Intending to devote the rest of his life to composition, Strauss was thwarted by the loss of his fortune invested in London, at the age of 50. Johann Sebastian Bach [videorecording]
Academy Media ; written, produced and directed by Malcolm Hossick
West Long Branch, NJ : Distributed by KULTUR International Films, [2005]
"One of the greatest composers in Western musical history, Bach created masterpieces of choral and instrumental music. More than 1,000 of his works survive from every musical form and genre in use in 18th century Germany. During his lifetime, he was appreciated more as an organist than a composer. It was not until nearly a century after his death that a musical public came to appreciate his body of work. Bach composed over 200 cantatas, both secular and sacred. His command of many instruments and their resources is evident from his six cello suites, six violin sonatas and partitas, four lute suites and the accompanied sonatas for flute, violin, viola, and viola de gamba (now played on cello). For chamber orchestra, he composed four extended suites, as well as the six Brandenburg Concertos, and concertos for harpsichord, violin, and oboe. Bach's styles were always evolving and innovative, and always ahead of their time, which is perhaps why he met with some resistance during his lifetime and received his due respect posthumously"--Container.

Academy Media ; written, produced and directed by Malcolm Hossick ; Skan Productions
West Long Branch, N.J. : Distributed by KULTUR International Films, [2005]
Program (29:42) -- Overview of music (5:40)

"Brahms was one of the seminal music figures of the 19th century. He composed symphonies, concertos, and many songs, piano pieces, and chamber works. Opera is the only major musical medium in which he did not write. More than any other composer of the second half of the 19th century, Brahms was responsible for reviving what is termed "absolute" music. THis describes compositions which were to be accepted on their own terms as interplays of sound rather than as works that depict a scene or tell a story. Brahms was a master of composition. He often used established techniques, but with such novel and refreshing approaches that the listener first perceived the beauty and strength of the music, and only later becomes aware of the composer's technical mastery. Throughout his entire life Brahms was looked upon as the successor to Beethoven in the evolution of German Romanticism and struggled to meet these expectations." -- Back of container.

垃圾围城 = Beijing besieged by waste / Wang Jiuliang Studio present ; Mu Ying Media, The 6th Culture and Arts Festival of Songzhuang, China in association with Mod'Art Art Fund ; Bao Kun, project consultant ; Zhu Rikun, montage director ; director, Wang Jiuliang
[New York, N.Y.] : The dGenerateFilms, 2011
"Photographer Wang Jiuliang fearlessly documents the illegal landfills encircling Beijing and the black market of trash that threatens to poison the city. With a population of 20 million people and growing, the megalopolis of Beijing produces 30,000 tons of waste each day. Award-winning photographer and filmmaker Wang Jiuliang spent three years visiting 460 landfills in the area, many of which are operated illegally without official supervision. Wang's images document the environmental, economic and human effects of these landfills. Scavengers sell recycled cooking oil back to restaurants, real estate developers build schools and residential complexes over waste dumps, and trash is fed to livestock. Beijing besieged by waste sheds a startling light on the costs of China's spectacular development, as once-vital farmlands, and rivers are transformed into dumpsites for mountains of waste collected from the booming cities. An informative and alarming portrait of urban ecology, the film sparked national media attention in China, leading to government policy changes to deal with the rising garbage crisis. 'Shot with both a photographers eye for aesthetics, and an activist's commitment to social change, the film is a striking reminder of the inextricability of society and its trash'. Beijing besieged by waste is a stirring call to action before out planet is consumed by garbage."
